Character History

Origins
For most of the canon, Perell's origins remain as nebulous as he is, but it eventually comes to light that Perell's status as a Wizard was not something he was born with, but not anything he had a choice with, either. He described his life from Before as ordinary-- He had a wife and children, and had a job as a ferryman within the Riverways Principality.

- He was in his mid-forties when he Became a Wizard. Per his description (and descriptions from the head librarian in the distant country of Makaal, Farah Marghani) there was a void in the magic within the world and the powers that be rushed to quickly fill the void-- and Perell himself was the answer. It was an excruciatingly painful occurence, as the very biology of his body had to shift to accommodate the sudden surge of magic in his system. Per canon discussion, this was only as painful as it was due to the fact that he was well into his adulthood and his body was used to being human. As it stood, he could barely accommodate the magic within himself...

- A small village took the brunt of this magical overload, when he inadvertently flash-froze it and everyone within it while he struggled with his newfound powers. Thus, he was unable to return home.

- Along the years, as he got used to his newfound powers, he met Aquaria (who had resided just a little north of the region he hailed from) and Morris Wadge. Although they differed in their opinions, they balanced each other and respected each other's talents and skills-- and appreciated each other on other levels as well.

- About 90-odd years before the start of the canon was an event known as the Exodus, wherein the wizards of the world forged an opening into a completely different plane of reality and left the world-- and left the energies of the world wholly unbalanced in the process. The wizards believed that they were being exploited for their talents by the general population and banded together in the Wizards First movement. Morris Wadge himself was among those who left, which left Perell feeling deeply betrayed and hurt.

- Because of the tension between Wizards and the whole of civilization, they were hunted down and imprisoned because they were deemed a danger to society. Perell was among those rounded up, and he was held in a disembodied form within a box made of unbreakable Wardstone-- completely isolated and even devoid of all sensory stimulation.

As the others in the cast have written more expansive histories. I will link them here with further commentary about Perell's role each season.

Season 1

The party is tasked by the Menders to take a mysterious stone box to the Vault, where it could be safely stored. The contents of the box were, at that time, unknown-- but it was heavily guarded by the Bullywogs, the sentient frog people who had ransacked the small village of Mudlark

Season 2

It wasn't too long before the party started feeling effects from transporting the Box. Influenced by Billie's presence as a amnesiac and disguised fairy walking through the world, Perell reawoke from dormancy and his own magic started seeping through and into the world outside of the Box. This manifested in Billie's actions and dreams, where he encountered a man that he could not see clearly on a hill underneath a lone tree-- the Lone Tree Hill, so to speak. It was the entity whom we later come to know as Pellar who spoke first, to apologize for his presence seeping through and influencing Billie enough to violently kill a crocodile which had attacked them.

Later, Billie dreamed of that man again-- this time properly introducing himself as Perell. He revealed himself this time, with a face that was neither young nor old and told Billie a story via the multitude of pictures that were sewn into the very fabric of his fine, multi-toned blue robes. He offered to teach Billie, to which Billie promptly asked if that would allow him to have a similar robe. While the answer was yes, they came to an impasse-- no decision was made on the mattter.

Unknown to Perell at the time was the fact that Billie was suffering more effects due to Perell's unwitting influence. The young boy had grown irritable and fatigued, and was prone to fits of uncharacteristic violence to the point that they consulted a local wise woman for advice. Since Magic could be dispelled and forced into another form through water, she advised that the only way to help Billie was to go to a nearby stream rumored to hold power and dunk him like a teabag in those waters. Thus, they made their way to do so-- but the results were dire.

The team was split in the process of rescuing Billie, and they lost Vyng's entire being to the Spirit World.

Season 3

After the incident in the river with Vyng's death, Tuck and Billie set out looking for a means figure out how to bring him back. This brought them to the Highspear Mall, where they had heard of a Ranger called Seathane Wick who could be of assistance. Seathane agreed to help-- as part of an exchange for matters that he needed to take care of.

As part of the arrangement, they have to protect the very fortune teller who knows how to send them into the Spirit World so they can take care of their individual missions-- Tuck and Billie to save Vyng, Seathane for personal matters. Before this trek, Billie has another dream of Perell, who explains what had happened at the river. It was all of his pent up negativity that had been affecting Billie up until that point-- and the manifestation of that negativity that had hurt Vyng. He offered to help Billie learn magic, but Billie understandably refused. Regardless, Perell said he would be around to help if he was needed.

And he was.

Later on, once they were properly in the Spirit World and facing obstacles they couldn't surmount alone, Billie called on Perell from his box. Being in the Spirit World, he could manifest properly for everyone-- but, without a body, he was forced to overtake the Koi Spirit, lest he lost himself to the ether. This was not a comfortable arrangement for anyone involved, and Perell needed to figure out on the fly how to make the fish body work for him by shifting its shape into different configurations, adding arms and legs as needed, and changing its mass or height to suit the situation at hand.

During this time Billie explained that Perell was connected to the Piss Monster that killed Vyng, Tuck tried to vent his frustrations on the Box (to no avail), and Perell explained that Billie is capable of great power-- but is frustrated himself that Billie doesn't seem to want to learn how to harness those abilities.

The conversation snowballed from there, with Billie complaining about the work and Seathane pointing out that those very abilities were what caused the ruined state of the world. If Perell wanted to help, he should help them find Vyng-- and a little bit of haggling led to Perell personally carrying Billie through the Spirit World as part of that exchange.

The interactions between Perell and Billie at this time consisted of Perell continuing to try to coax Billie into learning and Billie refusing-- but Billie instead being the one to help Perell figure out how to best utilize the Koi body and being his personal cheerleader with the more difficult attempts at shape shifting.

They did retrieve Vyng, with the assistance of the tree spirits. It was a combination of Vyng and Seathane's magic that allowed them to escape-- at a cost. Vyng's hands became crystal as part of the exchange, and Seathane volunteered to stay behind and allow Vyng to use his body to properly return back to their home.

Season 4

The party awakens to being bound and under the control of the very Menders who had originally hired them to transport the Box. They find out that several weeks had passed while they were in the Spirit World, and that the world had started to change due to their actions on the spiritual plane. Crocodiles were extinct, the lands were flooding, and the moon itself was fractured and broken due to the incident at the river. The Menders had no good reason to allow them another chance, but a quick negotiation set them back on course to the Vault-- under the watchful eye of Meers Foulsmith, the young lad who had guided them in Mudlark right at the start of their journey. The boy was now missing a hand due to the Bullywogs they had to fight in order to even retrieve the box and was obviously both inexperienced reluctant to even take part in a questionable mission.

Billie spent a lot of time sleeping during this time, where they talked more about magic, Billie's memory, and what they needed to do in the near future. Billie recalled his true nature-- that of a fairy-- and started to learn small tricks he could do with his innate magic. The first of these was switching the taste of rocks to cookies, but not changing their nature as rocks. This created a tempting situation when they started to run out of food... but rocks are not meant to be eaten, even if they taste like cookies.

They make it to a village, where they convince the locals to allow them to stay. During this time, Perell approached Vyng and Tuck with a warning that Billie was remembering his nature as a capricious fairy who could leave this realm at any time if he wanted, and that Vyng and Tuck needed to take a stronger hand with Billie if they wanted him to stay. Both Vyng and Tuck swore that they would do what was best for Billie and support him however they could.

The next day the set out to take care of the tasks given to them by the villagers to discover what had happened at a logging camp, and they were intrigued by a strange blue moss they discovered growing all around the encampment. Billie tried to eat it, Vyng discovered that alcohol repelled it, and Perell excitedly explained that it was magic moss, but would not provide more detail. They further discovered that the moss had turned various travellers into zombie-like creatures, which prompted them to ask Billie to turn the water ways into... milk, because milk has the same effect on halflings as alcohol. Another attempt turned the waterway into wine.

They took back a fanny pack they had acquired along the way, which contained gold, a ruby, and a Forever Tent with multiple rooms inside of it. Once they were inside, Perell reappeared to help investigate-- and discovered that the Tent was the handiwork of a former contact who appeared to be a rival, Morris Wadge. There was no small amount of bitterness in Perell's tone as he regarded the oil painted portrait Morris had placed of himself in the foyer. While inside the tent together, they discussed what to do about the Vault-- and they as a group determined that they didn't have a choice but to go there, despite Tuck and Vyng having doubts about their orders. They would be looked for if they failed to arrive. If they went, at least they stood a chance of trying to change something, or at least creating a believable cover.

Thus, leaving Meers behind on the shores of the lake where the Vault stood because it had an enchantment that prevented anyone who wanted to enter from even getting close, they arrived at their destination. Within the Vault they encountered the Chamberlain-- an magically enchanted automaton from before the Exodus, whose body was comprised of stained glass. They tried to lie to the Chamberlain, but ultimately they saw no way out except to reveal their hand. Once inside, they called upon Perell for one last conversation before the inevitable-- who begged the three of them to not hand him over. Having the Box he was contained within meant sentencing Perell to untold amount of time in total confinement, where not even his senses received any input. When prodded about not using his magic, Perell protested that he was magic-- but he could at least put his powers to good use.

Tuck, taking initiative, began to hand the box to Chamberlain, prompting Perell to continue his desperate plea-- and that was enough. Tuck, satisfied with the answer, destroyed the Box with his axe that was forged in the Spirit World. The whole move had been a test to see whether or not Perell would try to retaliate or betray them-- and, when he didn't, that was all Tuck needed to believe that Perell indeed meant well with his efforts even though he was branded as a dangerous element by the powers that be in the world.

Unfortunately, this caused the Chamberlain to attack. Billie's arm was broken before Perell had regained enough control of his body to move, disassembling the Chamberlain into dust by way of stopping it-- and collapsing under the strain of so suddenly using his magic and his body after nearly a century of confinement.

He healed Billie's arm, and they reassembled the Chamberlain under a new directive: lie to the Menders about what went down in the Vault that day, and insist that the Box it carried was indeed untampered with.

Now knowing that their time was limited, the party gathered Meers and ran. Although Meers was reticent about Perell's presence, he was quickly convinced to at least try to trust Perell when the wizard transformed the boy's hook hand into a fully functioning prosthesis, with working fingers that could hold and grab objects.

They set forth to Crystal Bay, to gather their bearings and plan their next move.

Season 5

Perell spent much of their time in Crystal Bay cloistered up within the Forever Tent. Having just emerged from the Box as himself, he was lacking in everything... including clothes. Besides that, the second anything magical was noticed in the vicinity around him, he would be captured and held for the crime of being a Wizard. Ultimately, Perell did convince them to loan him enough gold to buy some clothes so he could go around town and gather information. He returned-- with a gaudy outfit in leather and a hat decorated with a feather that cost more than the entire outfit combined.

Trouble followed the party as they righted wrongs along their path, but it truly came calling in the form of Allison-- a succubus, and Tuck's ex-lover. The Light Guard from Makaal, drawn across the Sea of Graves in response to the natural upheaval caused while the party recovered Vyng from the Spirit World and from Perell's existance outside of the Wardstone Box, was on a mission to eradicate any element their religion and society deemed 'unnatural' from the land. This included Allison, who was stuck in Crystal Bay and couldn't leave due to her own magical nature, and now Perell. The party negotiated with Ruby Chunesday, the captain of a local band of pirates, to help with Allison's escape as well as their own. Like everything, it came with a price. They had to do a favor for Ruby and free one of her vessels from the Custom's Office.

They did in a fit of chaos that destroyed the dock and multiple ships, but they secured the ships and fulfilled their part of the bargain. Even after Allison's status as a double agent for the Light Guard was revealed and their own fates put in jeopardy, they chose to do what was right and help Allison-- even though it hurt enough that Tuck told her with no room for misunderstanding that he never wanted to see her again after this.

The double dealings led to them discovering that the Menders were in communication with the Light Guard, and that there were multiple high order organizations who were after all of them. A clandestine meeting with Meers and a contact for the Menders, a strange bard called Jaunter, further revealed that Jaunter had been sabotaged by the water demon created by Perell's own anger and pain while he was in the Box-- Pellar. The team managed to seal Pellar in a vase, which they took great pains to keep with them so that this type of incident would not happen again.

Although Vyng and Billie managed to escape the trap set by Jaunter in that time with the aid of the Thunderbird that Vyng had bonded with, Tuck, Meers, and Perell were captured and interrogated by the Torch of Makaal-- a general and apparent prophet for the Church of Makaal and the God of Light, and a man imbued with strange powers that were akin to magic despite not being a Wizard.

The Torch made it clear that they were seeking one thing: the Wizard. Perell, overcome by fear, was frozen into silence by the notion of being sentenced to a similar imprisonment after he had just been freed. It was a last ditch moment when Meers spoke up-- claiming himself as the Wizard. This alone would have been enough to simplify matters and turn their efforts into a rescue mission, but Tuck threw a wrench into those workings by also declaring himself to be the Wizard.

All three were taken captive until they could sort the matter out.

During this time, Vyng and Billie go on a rescue mission themselves and end up separated-- and in time they all are forced to face the Icon of Truth. The entity, the paragon of all that was True, was forced into physical form by the use of an extremely old man as it's vessel, and appeared to everyone as what could be interpreted as the truest version of themselves. Everyone before the Icon was forced to admit their Truth:

Billie was the Springtime Fairy of the Endless Boughs
Vyng was the Spirit Walker and Prince of the Boreal Reach
Meers... was only trying his absolute best.
And Perell...

Was a Wizard.

Tuck, spared from the forced confessions by forces unknown, was able to see the reality of the situation through the lens of his spiritually attuned axe forged in the Spirit World-- and upon prompting divulged what he saw:

A slave.

Upon Perell's admission, pandemonium broke loose as the forces aboard the ship they stood on moved to capture him. The only line preventing this was the one that Tuck had scored across his own chest. While Tuck, Vyng, and Billie worked out a distraction, Perell used his transmutation magic to transform the body of the ship into mud-- and they escaped, back to the cove that was Ruby Chunesday's hideout.

It wasn't long before they were pursued.

Vyng, in a feat of his elemental mastery, rode the storm called up by his Thunderbird into battle-- and the sheer level of raw power and destruction it caused destroyed all the ships...

And split apart the team.

Season 6

After the debacle that was escaping Crystal Bay, Perell found himself separated from the party and set adrift towards the center of the Sea of Graves. The center of the sea itself was a massive amount of magical influence, and Perell was drawn inexorably in that direction due to his own magical presence upon the world. Like was recalling like-- he had no choice in the matter.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, Billie, Tuck, and Vyng had given chase to rescue Perell-- and, caught in the torrential storms that stirred the oceans, Billie lost the bag containing the Forever Tent (crafted by Morris Wadge) and the vase which contained the entity that was born of Perell's inner darkness, Pellar. With newfound freedom, Pellar did what was natural: sought out Perell, overtook both the Wizard's body and power, and made his way towards a monolith that was the grave of the Moon Goddess with intent upon using her power to wreak havoc upon the world.

It was a conjunction of spirit, fairy influence, and magic all brought upon a single point: Tuck's axe, forged by the efforts of himself and his friends in the spirit world, which freed Perell's body from Pellar's control--

But, severed Perell's connection to magic.

Perell himself, recovering from weeks spent with his body not even functioning in the capacity of a human, didn't notice immediately. However, he was frightened enough once he realized the truth that he promptly went to Vyng for help and advice.

He never should have been magic in the first place. None of this was supposed to happen.

After Perell's rescue, the party set forth to Makaal for a multi-layered task, to find out what was happening to damage Tuck's homeland so badly and to find a way to help Perell get his magic back.
